I know you were worried about so many color clashing against each other but I think the right amount of details and complimentary colors working for you here. I'm sure it was tricky and you tried a variety of things, but the end result works. Penta's looks beat up for sure, lol. The amount of punishment wrestlers go through is insane. Anyone thinking it's all cloud 9 obviously have only watched modern WWE.

pewternatural responds:

Even in the WWE, if you look up pictures of Cody wrestling Seth Rollins with a torn pec, that is really gruesome. It looks like someone smashed his chest with a tenderizer. As for the painting, I think you're right and the colors ended up complementing each other. In the early version I sent you, I had muted the background, but once Penta was rendered, I was able to use it at full saturation. I think the reds in the background, really work with the crimson mask.

damn, I can tell that you spent a lot of time on the clothes. There's so much detail along with great shadow work

pewternatural responds:

Yea, on this piece, since half the face was covered, I knew that the clothes would be what made the painting. I actually saw this promo picture a couple of months ago, but didn't know if I could do it justice, because of the complexity of the clothes. I'm glad I tried it though, the challenge really kept me engaged and now I want to try something even more challenging, if possible.

This came out completely different than the sketches you've shown me previously. Obviously you decided to try something different with the painting style. Is thinks a style you want to continue trying in the future, or too much work? I can see doing so probably took sometime with all the individual "paint" dabs. (Also, Coffin Inc was always a cool stable.)

pewternatural responds:

I do like the style and it isn't as time intensive as it might seem, but I don't really like how this came out. I think I would have been better off going for either a cell shaded look or an actual pastel painting. It was fun to do the technique, but it just doesn't look good here. I do want to try the style on something else though.

I also agree, Coffin INC and Casket Jett where fun characters.

Oh you really did pick a difficult picture to go for, but it is looking more smoother given the lighting is more stylistic. Somehow you've got her puffy cheeks too. I think the nose on this one is better than the previous pic, but perhaps the angle she's must have been a nightmare. Again, side-by-side you can tell it's the same person, but if I saw it on my own I'd know she's Asian, lol... but it's not like I'm intimate with Saiki. That's why I don't feel like I'm qualified to tell you if I can tell it's her or not, you know? Right now I think she does.

pewternatural responds:

Honestly, even if you knew Saiki, I think the image is cropped so close to her face, that you wouldn't be able to tell it's her. Those puffy cheeks were fun to do, that and getting the lips just right. I wanted to try a very light skinned person, because I have a harder time painting light skin. Usually I use too much yellow or pink and the color will seem off. I think I got it subtle enough in this around, on the eyes and in the nose, that the definition is there, without it looking off color.

I think it's close enough, but then again you have your reference image there so it's easy to tell. I can't say if you had drawn someone I'd know but didn't tell me who it was if I'd be able to say, but I'd think I could this is pretty close to her facial features.

pewternatural responds:

I think what mostly throws me off is the nose, it is slanted off to the side, which it isn't in the reference. The shape of the head also feels a little longer in the original. You're probably right though and I'm nitpicking. What I really need to work on is painting eyebrows and hair that has more life in it. We'll see if the next one turns out better. I do like that this one doesn't feel as overworked as some of my other stuff.

The finished version looks amazing. Rim-lighting always is a nice "cheat" to make things pop, huh? I love it and it really works well here. Looks like the two are all in and have been at it for a while. Jobber just probably wants the match to be over by this point so she can get some Wendy's Chili with Jim Cornette. She must have pissed off Manatsu somewhere during the match, like botching an turnbuckle spot.

pewternatural responds:

Yea the rim lighting really makes this pop. The jobber had the unfortunate assignment of taking on Manatsu before a big PPV match, where they wanted to get over how dangerous is. Jobber gets a smack in then and that's in, then its forearm shot, big boot, , Saito Supplex, face stomps, Tiger Driver and the pay window for Manatsu.

Oh man, sorry! I didn't see this until today. I dropped the ball. going to the picture, I have to say your new bushes has done wonders for both fabric and skin texture. Hair is even good too. I know you were just trying it out, but I think your first outing using them is great. BUT yeah I'm with you on image sizes. Both here and pixiv have issues. Even deviantFart did.

pewternatural responds:

No worries, I figured you were busy or not feeling well. These brushes were fun to use, I think I overworked things do and didn't let them just be enough, that though is an overall problem with my art. I need to not over blend and leave harsher edges that are more broken, but that goes against my natural instinct towards smoother paintings.

lol @ "fantasy-bastard" tag

JakeTerror responds:

That's more for cataloguing than anything.

This totally anonymous woman is hypothetically beautiful. Seeing the final picture after seeing the WIP is rewarding and proof that all the prep under coloring is necessary for a crazy good result.

pewternatural responds:

Unfortunately, this portrait of a totally anonymous woman, is anonymous, because when I showed it to them, they did not realize it was them, lol. I didn't say anything, just means I have a long way to go with portraits. So, in terms of a portrait this one is a failure. In terms of a painting though, I'd call this one a success. I think I got the skin to really read like skin. I have also heard that it is really hard to draw someone smiling and it not coming out as uncanny valley, so I think I succeed there. I almost want to print this out, just to see what it looks like irl. Things always look different on my laptop screen than my tablet screen, though I'm pretty sure things print closer to the tablet, since it is much higher resolution and the colors seem to be truer. So in conclusion, I'm pleased at it as an artwork, but it doesn't work as a 3 kings day present.

Do you enjoy using halftones or is this a one-time experiment?

JakeTerror responds:

I've done them with my Fantasy Bastard Pages and my Sabu Drawing.

Halftones are a fun little technique that makes my work feel more vintage, and my colors a bit less garish.

One of the drawbacks is that you have to keep all four colors on separate layers on multiply for it to work (similar to the original process used to color on newspaper).

You do lose out on being able to use the fill bucket with this, but it's rarely if ever necessary.

While I personally enjoy playing with it, I do worry that it doesn't translate well to Digital Media.
At the same time it's probably me overthinking it. What do you think of how it's being implemented?
